Josef Myslivecek: Concertos for Violin and Orchestra in F major and D major

Renowned for his operas, Josef Myslivecek (1737-1781) was the son of prosperous miller in Prague. Employing the same artistry that he used in his vocal lines, he wrote violin concertos that many believe are among the finest composed in the generation between Antonio Vivaldi and Wolfgang Mozart. Mentioned in Mozart’s correspondence more than any other person outside the family, Myslivecek was a gifted symphonist who likely pioneered two forms of chamber music as well, the string quintet with two violas and the wind ensemble.
